Our musical selections
were composed before 1865 & arranged for a military brass band. They include
marches, waltzes, schottishes, and concert music. Our musical arrangements
are taken from 19th century sources. There are some surviving band books
of the time, both Northern and Southern, and we do use copies of these.
We still work with the difficulty of interpreting the original music,
which is typically lacking in even basic instructions about dynamics,
pauses, or even tempo. Music was not usually taught in schools, so trained
musicians were scarce. Army regulations did state that at least one musician
should be able to read music! Although high quality bands were rare, we
strive to follow in their footsteps. |
